Dear All,

It's finally time to GO DARK. To complete the process of GOING DARK, actually. It's a process that began in June, 2004. It's a process that I must now take to the next level.

Yes, The New Freedoms are making all this possible.

Let me tell you: The New Freedoms are astounding. Priceless, even! Actually, it's hard to put all this into words. What I do know: I am extremely grateful for the new opportunities that are now on the table. To feel THIS FREE at this specific moment in time is truly an amazing feeling. It's a feeling that most people can only dream of. For most, True Freedom never happens. Well I'm NOT LIKE MOST, that's for sure.

For me, being Truly Free also means being free of the write-up (making even minor updates to it) and being free of my Blogs (creating entries for LJ and MySpace). Openly chronicling what's next in my life is absolutely *not* an element of The New Freedoms. In fact, right now, the idea of chronicling ANYTHING seems really silly. It seems so rooted in WHAT WAS and could tend to pull a being away from WHAT IS and WHAT WILL BE. My next steps will be taken in private, free from the prying eyes of Internet Strangers. Inner Circle Only!

So: my Blogs and "the 111 experience" are now in "archive" mode. In fact, at some point, the write-up will no longer be available (except, of course, at the many different archive sites out there). My Google Ads are now turned off.

Staying in touch:

If you're important enough to me, we already know how to stay in touch. And we're doing it. If you're on the fringe or I don't know you at all (you know who you are), please don't bother me with a hollow "reaching out" gesture. In fact, you're now flagged as JUNK.

Listen, the Dark is not a "bad" place. Just like the Light is not a "good" place. They just are. This Final Curtain of sorts that I'm doing right now here in LiveJournal is just another rung on the ladder. This has been a wonderful experience - sharing all these personal details of my life with you all. I've met thousands of wonderful people all over the world by doing that. By sharing. I have no regrets around what I've shared. And yes, even though I have tended to OVER-share with some of you over the past 10-15 years, I still have TONS of secrets. Imagine that! You don't know everything there is to know about me. Huh! Not by a long-shot. Huh!!

Who knows what's next? I may start to PODCAST some day. That would be fun. But seriously, not any time soon. GOING DARK really does mean GOING DARK.

For now, it's back to the script that I stopped working on way back in '97. A "Best Screenplay" award is absolutely *not* a requirement of The New Freedoms (or for True Happiness, either). But it sure would be nice.

To summarize the completion of the GOING DARK process, John Lennon said it best: "I just had to let it go."

So I did.

Jan. 29th, 2006 @ 10:11 pm The TMP_CLOSURE Has Arrived - Again?! Yes, Again...
Current Mood: At Peace
Current Music: Pink Floyd (WISH YOU WERE HERE)
Hello.

The next 2-3 weeks are going to be MONUMENTAL weeks. I kid you not. There's no other way to describe them. By the time we reach Valentine's Day on 2/14, the landscape will have changed in ways that, right now, are incomprehensible.

The next two weeks:

1) Heading to NJ on THU this coming week (celebration of RRL's life to follow on SAT).

2) Heading to MD and DC next SUN. This includes stops at RDASRA (brother and his family in MD) and then DBG & company in DC for his annual Super Bowl party. Then after that, who knows. Don't really know when I will be back in KS. Isn't that funny? How could that be?! SO MUCH UNCERTAINTY. HA! I would guess I will be back some time during the week of 2/13. But really, I'm not sure when I'll be back.

3) The New Freedoms will become fully operational. And none of us will ever be the same.

Ominous? Nah. It'll be OK. I promise. But the Sign of the TMP_CLOSURE must now go up --- and it will be in place for the foreseeable future:

TMP_CLOSURE

We were on quite a roll there. So you can spend the next 2-3 weeks reviewing the past month's worth of data (entries). HA!

The TMP_CLOSURE, she has begun.

p.s. --- Why Shadow Puppets? Well, it has to do with something my retired scientist/mathematician Dad told me when I was a kid. The analogy that I am about to share has since be co-opted by a number of modern physics gurus (like Brian Greene, for example) but I heard it first from my Dad. When I was probably around 10 or 11. At that time, my father was reading portions of a book called Flatland to me. In Flatland, everything was flat and two dimensional. This fascinated me. There's a whole tale about this self-discovery that the Flatlanders go through. It's a wonderful story, but I'm not here to talk about it. Search on Flatland and/or go to Amazon.com and just order the book. There have been several spin-off tales that sprang out of the Flatland world. Enjoy them all. When you have the time. But back to the deal with Shadow Puppets:

In conjunction with our adventures in Flatland, my Dad was helping me to understand the difference between the 2nd and 3rd dimensions. The shadow cast from his 3-D hand created a 2-D image on the wall. He asked me to describe the 2-D image as opposed to the 3-D hand. Of course, I said something like "It's simpler. It's flat. It doesn't really look like your hand. In fact, it looks like a moose." My father had created a 2-D moose on the wall from a flashlight shining onto his 3-D hand. This sort of analogy has become the corner-stone for current-day exercises in higher-dimensional thinking. Of course, it's currently not possible to think beyond 3-D or 4-D but if we were to try, what sorts of statements might we make? We might make the following statements:

Everything we see in this 3-D world is the "shadow" of a higher dimensional object or set of objects. The "light" being shined across these higher dimensional objects is of unknown origin and unknown composition. There exists a technology to observe the higher dimensional representations. But we, as humans, have yet to discover it.

So we are left with a theory about higher dimensional representations. Which is what leads me to say the following regarding this 2-D object, the ALL_ELEVEN:

ALL_ELEVEN

"If you're seeing the ALL_ELEVEN in 2 dimensions (which you probably are since you're reading mostly FLAT characters off of the screen right now) you're missing a key aspect of The Vision. The Vision is 3-D and has a 4-D aspect as well (its position varies with respect to time). It has a higher dimensional quality too (5-D and beyond) that relates to the fact that the ALL_ELEVEN, even in its 4-D mode, is merely a lower dimensional SHADOW PUPPET of a higher dimensional Object or set of Objects.

Furthermore, if you think that each object in the ALL_ELEVEN representation is the same size, I'm here to tell you that they are not. They are of varying sizes and the 2-D ALL_ELEVEN is only what you might (keyword = MIGHT) see if you looked at the ALL_ELEVEN from a particular set of spatial coordinates around the structure. Not only does their size vary, their composition does as well. Heck, they even have very distinct tastes. I can tell you that the Object in the middle, raised higher than the others, tastes like strawberry. And to top it off, these characteristics vary as you map The Representation into the higher order dimensions!"

Now, the notion of the ALL_ELEVEN having characteristics beyond what we can see in the 2-D representation is simply an extension of the Moose Shadows my Dad made on the wall. I expect that since this vision (and its precursor - the ALL_SEVEN) was received by me, it makes sense that its higher order characteristics are going to have some kind of relevance to things in my life and things that attract me.

I am very attracted to the taste of STRAWBERRY. Always have been. Always will be.

So I threw that in simply because it seemed right. If the characteristics are going to vary going into the higher order dimensions (just like that 2-D moose becoming my Dad's 3-D hand) then why not fix the sensation of taste as one of the higher order characteristics that become "visible"? I mean, taste is still a rather mysterious, almost extra-dimensional characteristic when you come right down to it. So why not Strawberry?

To sum it all up: The basic idea here is that ALL_ELEVEN and its precursor (ALL_SEVEN) are Divine symbols that have been received by me through an unknown method of discovery. But to make the leap that they may actually be lower dimensional representations of some extra-dimensional object or set of object requires very little faith in anything Divine. It's more an issue of how you view the objects around you. It's a physical thing. Are the objects around you merely 3-D flotsam and jetsam? Or is there another unseen component, a higher dimensional one, at play? Is the higher dimensional object or set of objects being "illuminated" in some fashion and this ends up being what you see in 3-D Land? It's very possible. Likely, even. And this isn't just little old me talking about this, this is actually a sidebar to String Theory. Look it up, if you don't believe me.

We are but the Shadows of our higher dimensional selves. Yes, in fact, we are Shadow Puppets. And the same can be said for every bit of matter and every form of life we interact with here in 3-D land. Now, the trick is this: find the mechanism for viewing the Higher Dimensional world. Expanding the brain's capacity for thinking in this fashion is essential to our continued development. I believe there are exercises for achieving this. Over the next year, we will share some of these exercises. As they become available. As they become de-classified.

A cosmic jellyfish appears to pulse with light in this multi-wavelength image of the Cartwheel galaxy, compiled from images taken by four space telescopes.

The galaxy probably came by its distinctive shape when a small galaxy – possibly one of the objects at bottom-left of the image – collided with it head-on 100 million years ago. The crash set off ripples in the large galaxy's gas that led to concentric rings of star birth.

"It's like dropping a stone into a pond, only in this case, the pond is the galaxy and the wave is the compression of gas," explains Phil Appleton of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, US. "Each wave represents a burst of star formation – the youngest stars are found in the outer ring."

Astronomers dated this star formation by studying the wavelengths of light emitted by each region of the galaxy. This image represents those wavelengths by color, with purple representing X-rays measured by the Chandra Space Telescope, blue representing ultraviolet light measured by the GALEX spacecraft, green representing visible light observed with the Hubble Space Telescope, and red denoting infrared light recorded by the Spitzer Space Telescope.

Repeat Dream - Same Theme - Different Locale:

- I start out the night nestled serenely in bed with Lisa (Mika's curled up at the foot of the bed - like a monkey).

- Wake up bright and early. It's a different house. Much older. Different part of the country. Rural farm house? Yes. Something like this:

Repeat

- There is snow on the ground. It's morning.

- In addition to Lisa, my parents and my brother and his family are all there too. There are others emerging now. Don't recognize them. Wait - there are some familiar faces. YIKES! What are *they* doing here?!

- "Why isn't this bothering anyone?!" I scream. "I mean, we went to sleep in one place and then we were obviously drugged or something and then brought here! That is SO wrong!"

- CB (friend of parents) sitting in chair knitting next to fire place. "Would you like some cinnamon buns, Jimmy?" "Ummmm... no." Out the window in back of her we see a 2-lane country road and an intersection. And TONS of snow. Where the fuck are we? And who took us here? And why?

- Remembered what happened last time we were in a dream like this - "Look, this is impossible. We couldn't have been taken to some other place while we were sleeping, right?"

- "There's only one answer," I announce to Lisa, my parents and everyone else who is now mingling about this country house that we've been taken to. "This has GOT to be a dream."

- Trigger wake up - "If you're tired of this, then simply wake up."

Lucid dreaming is the norm for me. But this was one of those EXTRA REAL lucid dreams. And yes, there was a bit of a VILLAGE-esque thing going on somehow.

"Why did you resign? WHY?!"

The New Freedoms, I suppose. And stuff.

SCI-FI NEWS:

Chase Masterson, "Leeta" in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, has been cast in a new independent film described as a "film noir" piece with elements of science fiction and science fact. "Yesterday Was a Lie" is a detective thriller that incorporates discussions of quantum mechanics and other reality-bending topics in its mystery tale.

In fact, the movie's lead, Kipleigh Brown, is a Trek alumnus herself. Brown appeared in the Enterprise third-season episode "The Forgotten" as "Jane Taylor," the deceased crew member whom Trip Tucker talks to in a dream.

In "Yesterday" Brown plays "Hoyle," the protagonist who "uncovers a plot to unravel earth-shattering cosmological secrets, smuggled out of 1930s Germany by a Nazi defector," according to the synopsis. Masterson plays a "glamorous lounge singer" who assists Hoyle in the investigation.

Principal photography is expected to begin soon. No distribution details have been announced. A teaser trailer can be found at the movie's official site, http://www.yesterdaywasalie.com/.

In a blog on the site, Brown praises the addition of Masterson to the cast. "The moment Chase walked through the door and read for us, something almost palpable clicked into place. She has the passion, the heart and the soul so crucial to this project... not to mention the incredible intellect, talent and beauty," she writes.

Jan. 24th, 2006 @ 05:30 am A Quick Reminder About STULL...
Current Mood: mischievous
Current Music: Howard 100 (SIRIUS Ch. 100)
As many of you know, I live less than 10 miles from the Spooky Little Town known as STULL, KANSAS. If you haven't come across Stull yet, here's a quick search you can do:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=gate+hell+stull

Yes, that's GATE, HELL, and STULL. You should get around 700 hits that you can feel free to peruse at your leisure. You can also take the next few minutes and read this. The local legends tell us, quite simply, that Stull, Kansas (specifically the cemetery) is a Gateway (or Portal, if you will) into the darkest regions of a place called HELL. Yes, it's the HELL you're thinking of - the stereotyped HELL that you'll find a rather elaborate description of in the Christian's Holy Bible. Whether or not you buy into Stull's role as a Portal to HELL, the legend really has sunk in.

Yes, during a visit to the US many moons ago, the Pope took this so seriously that he actually diverted his flight so as to not fly directly over Stull airspace. Stull's Zip Code, by the way, butts right up against the 666xx Zip Codes surrounding Topeka. At any rate, there's a section of "the 111 experience" write-up from 1997 that was purged a long time ago that I would like to share – it now only exists in the PDF archives. It speaks to our first visit to Stull a few months after we moved to Lawrence. It can be found here in this 1.14MB PDF archive of the old hard-copy:

http://www.the111experience.org/111pdf_5.pdf

But I will transcribe the relevant sections here to save you some time:

Lisa and I went over to a small town called Stull, which is around 15 minutes from Lawrence. The rumor says that the Devil itself (or some being that identified itself as the Devil) appeared there to several of the town's residents. There was supposedly a very old building on the cemetery property where the incident allegedly took place. We quickly found the cemetery but it was padlocked shut! There was even a huge (possibly electric) fence around the whole lot! The building is there too – its walls are now incomplete and it hasn't got any roof. The only thing left completely standing is the left side wall (as you're facing it). The wall has three very long, thin windows down the side. Lisa and I both knew what we were looking at. You guessed it: 111!!! We turned our heads at almost the exact same moment - and what did we see? We saw the front door of the church right across the street from the cemetery. It had three very curious windows on it: three long, thin windows – with the middle one smaller and thinner. I'm not sure that I like 111 coming up in this place, but I will continue to investigate the "Stull Incident" with Lisa in the coming months and see where it takes us.

[end of transcription]

Fast forward to 2006. A little-known WB program is set in the Midwest, and its two main characters are natives of Lawrence, Kansas. Its title is its subject matter: SUPERNATURAL.

http://supernatural.warnerbros.com/

Actually, it deals with "portals" and the classic battles of "Good" vs. "Evil" and Angels and Demons. They have been pretty coy about the fact that this is set in Kansas. So why is it set here? Well, three guesses and the first two don't count. I can tell you, without a doubt, that it will somehow be connected to Stull. Lawrence has an awful lot going for it as a very progressive town with a hip, happening University at its core. But the only thing remotely supernatural (aside from the fact that *I*, Jala*AN, live here!) is the fact that we are a stone's throw from Stull. Our local paper did a story on the show and the show's creator pretty much said this (and that "portals" will be involved - please, that's code language for STULL!).

I will be watching and will let you know when (not if) they move into the STULL part of the storyline. In Episode 9 they came back to Lawrence:

9. Home
First aired: 11/15/2005

"When Sam has nightmares of their old home, the brothers return to Lawrence, Kansas to investigate. They discover that a new family has moved into the Winchester's home, and the woman is the one that Sam has been dreaming about. The family has been hearing and seeing frightening things, and the brothers think it might be haunted by the thing that killed their mother. The enlist the help of their father's psychic to rid the house of the angry poltergeist."

Next Tuesday (1/24) is Episode 13 - "Route 666" - "Sam and Dean head to Mississippi to investigate mysterious car accidents involving black men."

By the way, the building in the Stull Cemetery that I referenced in the 1997 write-up piece was "mysteriously" demolished a few years back. It's been reduced to a pile of rubble and now sits, mostly unattended. Gates of Hell Fans can now grab pieces of it and sell them on eBay! Just don't tell anyone I told you to do that, though! ;-)

This annoying story is on the front page of the FOX-owned NY Post today:

Stern

It's already been picked up by the national media. It alleges that the government is contemplating censorship for satellite radio. It also alleges that SIRIUS is creating a new set of "rules" that Howard is going to have to follow. Just a few minutes ago, Howard debunked at least the second part of this. There are ZERO rules. And as for the FCC stepping in to regulate satellite radio, how can the government even *think* about putting restrictions on a service that you pay for? This is like cable. Only it's newer.

The bottom line: Clear Channel and all the other terrestrial radio mega-corporations are behind the lobbying to censor Stern on satellite. They are freaked-out because terrestrial radio sucks, they know that, and now they are lobbying like hell to save their dying businesses. It won't work. And as Howard pointed out, this story will only drive more subscribers to SIRIUS.

THE REVOLUTION HAS BEGUN. And you can't stop it. HA!!!

So despite the lies you read in the POST today, Howard hasn't changed anything about the show, isn't planning to change anything about the show, and hasn't been told to do so by SIRIUS. More to follow...

CURSES FOILED AGAIN FOR STERN
By DON KAPLAN

January 23, 2006 -- Howard Stern may be coming down with a Sirius case of the bleeps. High-level executives of the satellite broadcaster are developing an internal standards-and-practices document that will set boundaries for Stern and other shock jocks, The Post has learned.

"It’s something that’s being taken very seriously," a Sirius source said.

Stern's new show also is being broadcast on a time-delay, giving him the opportunity to censor the program — which he already has done.

Stern moved to Sirius in part because satellite-radio services such as Sirius and XM — unlike free terrestrial radio — are not policed by the FCC, which spent years waging an indecency war against him.

The battle resulted in big-bucks fines against Stern and his former employers at Viacom.

XM, which is now home to shock jocks Opie and Anthony, confirmed that it has had its own guidelines in place for some time, but declined to provide details.

The standards of the private satellite broadcasters can be far looser than those imposed by the FCC on the public airways.

Sirius' move toward self-censorship comes as pressure continues to mount in Congress to regulate programming on cable and satellite radio and TV.

For years, cable executives have resisted government threats of regulation, claiming that self-policing has been sufficient.

It's a move satellite radio seems to be getting ready to emulate.

But even with Stern safely out of the FCC's reach, his foes, including self-appointed anti-obscenity crusaders like John B. Thompson, argue that other government agencies should take up the cause.

"The DOJ [Department of Justice] now has the chance to make amends for its laxity during Stern's criminal conduct on terrestrial radio for 25 years," the Florida lawyer wrote to Bruce Taylor, who oversees the DOJ's Criminal Division in a Jan. 9 letter obtained by The Post. Meanwhile, Stern himself has asked for some restraint on his show, encouraging his staff not to use profanity too often.

On one occasion last week, Stern even "dumped" out a minor bit of his own broadcast to protect the identity of a staff member's family.

On Stern's old show, the dump switch was controlled by station officials, who frequently bleeped out racy material.

It's not clear whether Stern knew he'd be subject to any limitations when he signed on with Sirius, which is paying him about $100 million a year.

He also was awarded $220 million in stock after the company reported that it had signed up more than 3 million new subscribers, boosting its total to 3.3 million. XM has more than 6 million subscribers.

Sirius officials did not return calls for comment on the proposal.

The imposition of loose standards is not likely to put much of a dent into Stern's free-for-all broadcasts or scare off any of his advertisers, an expert said.

"I believe this is just an attempt to put things in place if and when [the government] turns up the heat on satellite radio, much like it has with cable from time to time," said Robert Thompson, director of the Center for the Study of Popular Television at Syracuse University.

"In the end, it won't mean much to the average listener or advertiser."

Advertisers are paying less for Stern's spots on Sirius than they did for his show on traditional radio — especially since there is no way to verify how many Sirius subscribers are tuning in to his show.

Sources said it may be as little as half of the $20,000 per 30-second spot that had been floated when he signed up.

12/27-1/2: 3.8 weeks
1/3-1/9: 3.2 weeks
1/10-1/16: 2.6 weeks
1/17-1/23: 3.1 (estimate)

Estimated TWP (Total Weeks Passed) since TUE, 12/27: 12.7 (2.93 months)

Now here's why we ran it TUE to MON. Nearly 2.93 (estimated) months ago this coming Tuesday we were in Disney World and I sent out the forwarded e-mail below to the family. They say it's cold but it's not as cold as it was in Kansas. We're here again all day today and will head back down to Mom and Dad's later on tonight. Another full day of Park Hopping!

Here are some pix --- they are quite large (1MB each?). They take about 5-10 seconds to load on a broadband connection (which we have here in our SWEET room at the Pol!). These are taken right from the window of our room. Enjoy!

Current Mood: geeky
Current Music: Classic Rewind (SIRIUS Ch. 15)
To get an even cleaner SIRIUS satellite radio signal than I've got already, we just finished mounting a brand new TERK SIR6 Home Antenna outside my office window here on the second floor of The MDC Fortress (our pet name for the house). Yes, these are the ones that are completely out of stock and on back order everywhere. You just have to know the right people, I guess. Heh. Just kidding - I got it brand new and unopened from someone on eBay. The antenna can get a clear view of the north AND a clear view of straight above. Since we folks here in Lawrence, Kansas actually straddle the line for "should point north" vs. "should point straight up" (based on the recommendations from SIRIUS), we've installed it in such a way that I can experiment with whatever gives the stronger signal.

Here it is:

Jan. 21st, 2006 @ 11:11 pm A Quick Reminder: If I've Given You a Card...
Current Mood: Feeling THE NEW
Current Music: Radio Classics 118 (SIRIUS Ch. 118)
The New

Yes, I do have "business cards" for this stuff. Trust me, they come in handy sometimes. The card shows the URL for my site, The ALL_ELEVEN (see above), my PO Box, and my e-mail address. And I don't give them out to just anyone, mind you. Only special people. I give them to people who I feel comfortable sharing this stuff with. How I gain this comfort level is a mystery, really. If it happens, it happens. It could happen with someone that I've just met. It could happen with someone that I've known for 7 or 8 years. If I've given you a card, it's a sign that I trust you. Or, better said, I trust you WAY more than I trust most other people.

I also give it to you as a trigger. A trigger into something that's far beyond normal, everyday reality. It's a trigger that comes straight out of the Wild and Strange World of Jim Ward-Nichols. Straight from My Heart. If I've given you the card, do me a favor: please don't leave it out on the kitchen table or on your desk or on the dresser or your nightstand. Put it in a safe, secure place. It's not meant for everyone. Normally, and there are a few exceptions, it's meant only for the person I've given it to and (perhaps, in special cases) that person's spouse or that person's close relatives and/or close friends.

I tell people that they should probably keep the fact that I've given them the card a secret but I also have a deep respect and trust for these folks too. So along with that trust comes the knowledge that they may decide to show the card to someone else. And usually, I won't have a problem with that.

Some very special cards have been handed out since 1/1. And some of them, quite frankly, should have been handed out YEARS ago. For a variety of reasons, I'm only just now able to share openly with some of you. It's all about The New. In this case, it's what I am starting to call The New Freedoms.

The New Freedoms are a subset of The New. I will be sharing more about The New Freedoms in the coming months. Stay tuned...

Jan. 21st, 2006 @ 10:11 am (Still) Predicting GOOGLE's Demise...
Current Mood: pleased
Current Music: Radio Classics 118 (SIRIUS Ch. 118)
Some of you already know this, but for those who do not, here goes.

A little over two years ago, I predicted Google's imminent demise. I gave them 5 years. In fact, the term "Google's Demise" is something I actually coined a year earlier. I had all sorts of very sound reasons for making this prediction. Here is the original prediction, posted on 1/3/2004:

Count me in as one of the very first people on the planet to have promoted GOOGLE. I was out there helping to spread the word to the rest of the general public at pretty much the very beginning. When people were saying GOO-WHAT, I was saying GOO-GLE. But at this point? What has happened to the company, this company that showed SO MUCH PROMISE, actually sickens me. And within 5 years, I predict that the term GOOGLE will be a faded retro-type memory. For all kinds of reasons. One of them being the ubiquity of non-Google-based search engines and better-than-Google search results. You heard it here first! Unless they censor this post, that is.

~~~
There's a ton of back and forth on this that you might find quite amusing. There are plenty of ways for you to find it. Most of this went on at google.public.support.general on Usenet. It can be accessed in a number of web-based ways - you don't need to use the "newsreader" feature on your e-mail client. Anyway, one of the things you'll find me mocking quite consistently was their DO NO EVIL catchphrase. DO NO EVIL. HA!!! This actually puts them into category 2 on my COMPASSION FOR THE VILE list - the LIAR category. So... I'm working on having compassion for them. Even if they don't deserve it.
But I still stand by my original prediction. 2009 is the year to watch. This will be the year that the notion of "Google's Demise" will be clear to just about everyone. Just yesterday, their stock tanked by 8.5%. Below, you'll find the reasons why. In the report below, you will find several items that I highlighted 2 years ago when most of the media was still in its "Google Can Do No Wrong" phase. I would expect that the guys and gals at Google are finally starting to experience a little thing called HUMILITY. In other words, several of them (especially those in charge) are scared shitless. HA!!! Good for them.
Is Google Out of Steam?
Downgrading its stock to sell, S&P's Scott Kessler explains why the search giant is vulnerable on several fronts. Key among them: click fraud
Here's a gazillion-dollar question for investors: Has Google's (GOOG) stock peaked? Since topping out at $475.11 during trading on Jan. 11, the stock has dropped to around $445. Although most Wall Street analysts are still bullish on Google shares, some bears are emerging. Scott Kessler, who follows Internet software and services stocks and is technology group head for Standard & Poor's Equity Research, downgraded the stock on Jan. 17 to sell from hold.
Kessler spoke with BusinessWeek Online's Karyn McCormack about the challenges for Google and why he lowered his recommendation. Edited excerpts from their conversation follow:
Why did you downgrade Google to sell?
We downgraded it on Jan. 17 for two primary reasons. Something that we think all investors have to keep in mind is valuation. Our 12-month price target for Google is $428, and it closed yesterday at around $467 -- 10% higher than our target. The other consideration that we employed in this decision is risk. I think people generally know about risk -- that is, stocks can go down. But I think people have largely forgotten about the notion of risk relative to Google.
What are the risks that Google faces?
I think investors should know the ABCs of Google risk. "A" is for the absence of material revenue diversification. As good a company as Google is, it still generates 99% of revenue from one source: Internet search advertising.
"B" is for building competition. Yahoo! (YHOO) is investing aggressively in search. It is No. 2 in the Internet search-advertising area and is doing its best to compete. Microsoft (MSFT) is slated to introduce adCenter in the second half of 2006. This will launch the company into Internet search advertising.
We do think that Microsoft's entry into this category is going to have an impact. In addition, Ask Jeeves, which was acquired by IAC/InterActiveCorp (IACI) last summer, says it will pursue a proprietary Internet search-advertising strategy.
Last but not least is Fox Interactive Media. This was created in mid-2005 by News Corp. (NWS), and includes MySpace.com, which has become an extremely popular destination for teens and twentysomethings. This is not speculation that Fox Interactive Media will pursue Internet search -- its executives have said they will do this. The question is how they will do it, either via acquisition or partnership. We don't expect it to partner with Google.
Getting back to the ABCs of Google risk, "C" is for click fraud. This is relatively unknown to most Internet users and investors. It's relatively simple. A recent study suggests that up to 30% of online clicks could be fraudulent -- meaning not authentic, or not consisting of real users delivering clicks. We're talking about synthesized clicks by people or a box that automatically rings up clicks that benefit Internet search companies like Google.
We think this problem is more pervasive than people think. We think it will affect advertisers' taste for Internet advertising and the prices they are willing to pay for ads. And this could have a negative effect on Google.
I don't know what is being done to stop click fraud on Google Web sites and on its AdSense network, which is advertising technology used by third-party, or other company, Web sites. They have to invest in technology and people around the concept of click fraud to ensure that it doesn't happen. At some point, this will become an issue that people will talk about in 2006.
Jan. 20th, 2006 @ 04:53 am Train Whistles, X-Mas Trees, & HOWARD All Mornin' Long...
Current Mood: relaxed
Current Music: Howard 100 (SIRIUS Ch. 100)
Hi.
Last night, for some reason, there were train whistles whistling all night long around here. This isn't a "city" kind of thing, mind you. It's like a you're-out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere-and-happen-to-have-train-tracks-located-nearby kind of a thing. It's a country thing, actually. I just LOVE hearing this sound out there on a crisp winter night. It's one of my favorite things. Can't say why.
I also like keeping the x-mas tree up until Valentine's Day, too. Laying down on the floor near the tree with just the dreamy light of a cracklin' fire going in the fireplace is also one of my favorite things. I got to do that for a while last night too. Very relaxing. It's a 7-foot tall, very full and real looking FAKE tree, BTW.
I feel very relaxed right now. Perhaps it's because I spewed all that anti-Bin Laden venom late yesterday? Boy, that felt good. I know, I know, it goes against my new COMPASSION FOR THE VILE edict. Not sure how to map that one in. Compassion for the VILE-est of the VILE is a trick I clearly haven't mastered yet.
I'm actually off from work today so I'm going to curl up next to my SIRIUS satellite radio receiver in a few minutes (the show starts at 5AM central time) and listen to the ENTIRE Howard Stern Show this morning. Being able to hear the show again is another one of my favorite things right now. Oh yes!
Have a great weekend, folks.
Please remember that these statements come from someone who is NEITHER a mindless jackass conservative NOR a knee-jerk reactionary liberal whiner. I am a highly educated and independent IT professional and TechnoPagan Mystic with a Masters degree who was disgusted by both Bush and Kerry. I voted GREEN in the last election. So... ASSHOLES (you *know* who you are)... keep that in mind if you decide to comment amongst yourselves on what I am about to say. Here goes:
Can someone please just raid the fuck out of Al-Jazeera's main offices, capture everyone working there, hold them as enemy combatants, and then force them to help us trace down where this fucking tape came from? And then use that information to hunt down Bin Laden and kill his fucking ass? Can that be arranged? Can someone make that happen? ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
Below, you'll find a report about the over-simplified "lesson" that Bin Laden thinks he's "teaching" us. Two words: FUCK HIM! And anyone who defends this message. Clearly, he is a delusional religious fanatic. He is ONE CLUELESS MOTHERFUCKER.
Hey Bin Laden: you (& yours) killed a close friend of mine when you flew those planes into the Twin Towers. FUCK YOU, ASSHOLE!!! I HATE YOUR FUCKING GUTS!!!
[pause]
So I guess here's a good spot for COMPASSION FOR THE VILE to take over.
[deep breath]
Ummmmm... no. He's a fucking dead man. Soon. Very soon.
CIA says voice on Al-Jazeera tape was bin Laden's
ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON – The CIA determined Thursday that the voice on a tape claiming preparation for an al-Qaeda attack on the United States was that of Osama bin Laden, an agency official said.
The audio tape, played by the Arab television network Al-Jazeera, was the first public communication from the terror group's leader since December 2004.
"Following technical analysis of the Osama bin Laden tape aired today, the CIA assesses that it was the voice of Osama bin Laden," said the agency official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak by name.
The official provided no details about how the CIA concluded that the voice was that of bin Laden.
The agency's determination was sure to intensify the scrutiny that officials from the United States and other countries will give to the recording.
Despite the tape, U.S. counterterror officials said they have seen no specific or credible intelligence to indicate an upcoming al-Qaeda attack on the country. The Homeland Security Department has no immediate plans to raise the national terror alert, spokesman Russ Knocke said.
Over the last year, there has been much speculation about bin Laden's whereabouts and even whether he was still alive. The tape apparently provides no definitive answers to either question.
However, a U.S. counterterror official said analysts had no reason to doubt an assessment by Al-Jazeera that the tape was recorded in the Islamic month that corresponds with December.
The national threat level was at "yellow alert," the middle of five stages, signifying an elevated risk of terror attacks. It has mostly been at yellow since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, but has been raised to the orange "high alert" level seven times since then.
Also Thursday, Vice President Dick Cheney warned that the United States still faced significant threats from a network of terrorists intent on establishing a radical Islamic empire throughout Northern Africa and the Middle East.
In a luncheon speech at the Manhattan Institute, a conservative public policy think tank, Cheney insisted the U.S.-led war in Iraq was essential to combating that threat.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the United States will not let up in the war on terror despite the threats on the tape.
"We do not negotiate with terrorists," McClellan said. "We put them out of business."
While warning against downplaying the taped threat, officials at intelligence and law enforcement agencies said there has been no recent increase in "chatter" that can indicate that such an attack is imminent. The officials discussed the tape on condition of anonymity because intelligence analysis is usually sensitive and because the tape was still being examined.
"If there is any actionable intelligence, we will act on it," McClellan said.
President Bush was told about the audiotape shortly after an appearance on the economy in Sterling, Va., McClellan said.
Intelligence authorities were examining why bin Laden would be speaking out after more than a year of letting his top deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, serve as al-Qaeda's public face in statements and other communications.
One official speculated that it might be an attempt to show supporters that bin Laden is still around.
